[BloomingdaleDC|#569] Bloomingdale Farmers' Market -- this Sunday!

Wed, 14 May 2008 06:58:01 -0700 (PDT)

+ See this 5/13/2008 message from a W Street NW resident regarding the weekend "shooting" near 2nd & U Street NW: "In reference to the shootings near U & 2nd Street NW, we did report what sounded like gunshots Saturday night. According to the police, it turned out that someone was shooting off fireworks from his back yard on Seaton. He was arrested."

+ From a resident on R Street NW: "Does anyone recommend a wood floor refinisher/repairer for water damaged parquet laid about 40 years ago. Some of it has buckled due to water damage, and there are some tiles in a closest that could be removed to replace it -- if they can be removed. Any recommendations would be welcome."

+ From a list member: "We are a couple living in Bloomingdale with a 3 month old looking for a nanny or a nanny share from June through September possibly longer if it works out well. We are also looking for references for day care if anyone has any, as our daycare has fallen through at the last minute (very stressful!!). If you know of a nanny that you could refer, or are interested in a share or if you have any good leads on any daycare options, please let me know. I can be reached at 917- 701- 8454 or at my email, nancywynn21 @ yahoo.com."

[ 1 ] Okay, Here It Is: The Recipe for the Sweet Potato Hummus, Which Was One of the Food Items at this Past Saturday's "Art at the Bear" Event at Big Bear Cafe

See this recipe passed along by Big Bear Café's Lana Labermaier:

From Carmen Wong: "Here's as good of a recipe as I can summon for the hummus. My apologies: sticking to recipes is not my forte! --ccw."

Sweet Potato Hummus

1 large sweet Potatoes - diced large, salt/peppered/oiled & baked at 350F for approx 30mins or until mashable
1 tsp cumin seeds & pinch of coriander seeds - toasted and ground
(or use pre-ground cumin, 1 tsp with dash coriander)
1 small garlic clove (or 1 large if you are a garlic junkie)
zest of 1/2 lemon
zest of 1/2 orange
approx 1/3 cup of orange juice & juice of 1/2 lemon (save the other half for if you like more acid)
black pepper, cayenne, brown sugar, salt to taste
as much olive oil as you need to help get the texture you want
**Approx 1 tbsp of tahini (more if you like)
**here's the part where you can cheat: 1 can of garbanzo beans OR pre-made hummus (in which case you can leave out the tahini)
(Note: you can even leave out the garbanzos and have straight up sweet tater hummus with tahini)

Directions:
Blend spices, and everything solid, adding oil or juice to help with the blending process till smooth. You will likely need to work in batches.
Taste to see if it needs sugar at this point. Blend in sugar if so (I added approx 2/3 tbsp to mine)
Stir in tahini and taste to season (if using store bought hummus, blend spices & everything solid, then stir in hummus)

garnish with toasted pistachios & crumbled feta -- all optional of course!

Voila!

[ 3 ] Pre-Bid Conference Tomorrow for Bond Building RFP

See this post from the popular DC Metro Urban Diary (DC MUD) blog on the RFP for the Bond Bread building.

Glad that the RFP does include a grocery store. Maybe the grocery space will be occupied by Fresh Grocer (www.thefreshgrocer.com) after all.

Let's see what development teams participate in this Thursday's mandatory pre-bid conference.

Howard Issues RFP for Bond Bread Building

Howard University has issued a Request For Proposals (http://www.howard.edu/redam/rfp/default.htm) for real estate developers to submit bids for a "first-class, mixed-use development" at 2112-2146 Georgia Avenue. Part of the 2.2 acre site at the corner of V St. and Georgia Avenue, the Howard Town Center, was offered to Howard by the District of Columbia just two weeks ago in an exchange designed to facilitate Howard's residential development, and the University obviously plans to waste little time in moving forward with development of the neighborhood.

The project is the site of the Bond Bread Building, a property long contested by its one-time tenant, which lost a legal battle for control of the land. According to the RFP, the development "must include rental apartments, retail (including grocery store) and parking," and is strongly suggested to be LEED certified. Though the site has a max
